A mother and her boyfriend were handed the death sentence yesterday for killing the woman's 3-year-old daughter.
High Court judge Datuk Nurchaya Arshad passed the death penalty on Wong Mei Ting, 26, and Tan Peng Tong, 29, after the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Wong and Tan were found guilty of killing Jasmine Lee Siew Hui at No D-3-15, Block D, Third Floor, Bayu Apartment, Taman Bukit Serdang between midnight, March 1, 2010, and March 14 of the same year.
The couple were accused of repeatedly kicking, pinching and hitting the girl using cloth hangers, which led to her death.
They had also left the child at home alone in a room after tying her hands and legs with towels while they went on a trip to Malacca.
Both were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the mandatory death sentence with Deputy Public Prosecutor Fadzillah Begum Abdul Ghani lead the prosecution.
"The only justice for the child is to mete out a heavy penalty on the accused," she said.
