Did you know that Yamaha, manufacturer of musical instruments and motorcycles, once designed a cool supercar that never hit the roads?

Designed in 1992 by Takuya Yura, the whole concept of the Yamaha OX99-11 was based on the philosophy to provide the experience of a pure racing car for mass consumers.

The sports car was originally conceived as a single seater. Yamaha requested a two-seater vehicle, and thus a tandem seating arrangement was suggested, which kept in with Yamaha's motorcycle expertise.

With a body made entirely from handmade aluminium panels, the car had a top speed of 350kmh and could accelerate from standstill to 100kmh in 3.2 seconds.

The cockpit-looking roof could also be opened via a door in 'gullwing' style.

However, the Japan economy was in recession at that time and Yamaha concluded that they would not be able to find enough customers for their supercar.

Time and budget constraints also delayed the project, which was eventually cancelled in 1994.

The first four-wheeled automobile made by Yamaha was also its last.

Today, the Yamaha OX99-11 is valued at more than $1.2 million dollars.
