Changi Airport welcomed its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner commercial flight, operated by Japan Airlines (JAL), with a water-cannon salute on Sunday.
JAL will be using the plane on all Tokyo-Singapore flights from early 2013.
Currently, there are two JAL flights daily on this route.
Boeing's Dreamliner is the next big thing to hit the aviation industry since the Airbus 380 superjumbo in 2007.
The Dreamliner, which has a seating capacity of up to 300 passengers, is touted to be 20 per cent more fuel-efficient than any other similar-sized jets. The flying experience is also supposed to be more pleasant.
JAL took delivery of its first two B-787 in March, after a delay of about three years while the plane-maker wrestled with a manufacturing glitch.
