Two male China nationals arrested for housebreaking spree

The police have arrested two Chinese nationals for suspected break-in activities at various residential estates around Singapore.

Over a two-week period, the suspects, who were on Social Visit Passes, targeted homes in private residential estates of Siglap, Frankel, Simpang Bedok, Simei and Pasir Panjang.

In a statement to the media, the police reported that the two men could have broken into the residences by scaling over the boundary walls and climbing into the kitchen or the washrooms. They would then raid the houses for valuables.

After receiving several break-in reports, officers from Bedok Police Division worked together with officers from other divisions to conduct investigations to trace the culprits. A Special Task Force team was also set up to apprehend them.

On Sept 19 at around midnight, the Task Force officers nabbed the two suspects in Geylang and seized various items such as mobile phones, Apple products, a black torchlight, a sum of $4,800 and an assortment foreign currencies.

The two suspects will be charged in court on Sept 20.

If convicted, they could face a jail term of up to 14 years.

Supt Jarrod Pereira, Deputy Commander, Bedok Police Division, said: "These housebreakers, they choose their victims. And you can avoid being a victim by taking simple measures like locking up your house, even if it's for a short while.

"If you go out for a meal, lock up your house. Install good quality grills, locks, CCTVs, even burglar alarm systems. All these will ensure that you don't become a victim of housebreaking."
