The National University of Singapore (NUS) launched a new professorship in social work at the university's 60th anniversary gala dinner this evening.
The S R Nathan Professorship in Social Work will help the university in bringing in renowned academia and encourage research among scholars in Singapore and Asia on issues related to social development, poverty and asset building.
NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said that the professorship was named after former president S R Nathan for his passion in social work education and his contributions to the advancement of society.
Plans are currently underway to appoint a full-time faculty member who will engage in the work of the Department's Centre for Social Development (Asia).
The appointed professor will also devote attention to pertinent issues on the social work front for Singapore in the coming years.
Some of these issues include studies on social development programmes and research into ageing, child welfare, family well-being, and asset development for the poor.
So far, the professorship has received gifts totalling $1.7 million from Tote Board, Singapore Press Holdings and Keppel Care Foundation. The department also hopes to raise an additional $1.3 million.
