More than 20 houses and six vehicles have been damaged by uprooted trees and broken branches during a freak storm in Taman Megah Ria and Taman Kota Putri in Johor Bahru.
Site supervisor Sirai Lanchap, 57, who had a narrow escape when a tree came crashing down on his home, said he felt uneasy after the downpour started around 3pm yesterday.
"I was just opening my front door when I heard this loud sound and realised that a tree beside my house had fallen on my roof," he said.
Construction worker Mohd Shahril Abd Jalal said he saw trees tumbling down like dominos.
"There was a sudden gust of wind and the rain started pouring down like a waterfall. Suddenly, I saw trees crashing one after another. One of it fell on a car," the 27-year-old said, adding that he rushed out with his neighbours to remove the tree.
The driver of the car was unhurt and drove away with a dent on the vehicle.
Cashier Badariah Ismail, 51, said she saw small blocks of ice falling near her porch when a strong gust of wind blew off the awning.
"It felt like the world was going to end," she said.
Johor Jaya assemblyman Tan Cher Puk said affected families would be temporarily placed at two kindergartens.
