A man who put up an online posting carrying an incitement to violence on National Day two years ago was jailed for two months on Friday, The Straits Times reported.

This was after the prosecution successfully appealed to the High Court.

Engineer Gary Yue Mun Yew, 36, had initially been fined $6,000 by a district court in March for posting a comment on the Facebook wall of sociopolitical platform Temasek Review.

He posted a link to a YouTube video depicting the assassination of former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat with the comment "We should re-enact a live version of this on our grandstand during our national's (sic) parade!!!!!!".

The district judge had concluded then that Yue was seeking attention rather than inciting violence when he made the post.

But the prosecution appealed and sought a jail term of between six to nine months for Yue.

On Friday, Justice Quentin Loh agreed that a fine was inadequate, citing a case in England last Aug where two men who were jailed four years for inciting people to riot via Facebook.

He is the first person to be charged for the offence.

Yue lost his job at Singapore Technologies Kinetics as a result of the case, and had started work at a German firm three weeks ago, reported The Straits Times.
