Car repair shop-owners say they may be forced to raise prices of repairs after the implementation of the lemon law on Sept 1.

Kar-ching!

Under the lemon law, if a product is found to be defective within six months of purchase, the seller is obliged to repair, replace, or refund the price.

Wear and tear is not covered under the law.

According to car repair shop owners interviewed by Lianhe Wanbao, customers will now be made to sign a document which states that they are pleased with the repairs, after they are completed.

Said one shop owner, Mr Lu Yu Gui: "We face a headache now with the lemon law, especially when it comes to more extensive, and expensive, repairs.

"Some parts may cause more than a thousand dollars, and it will be a waste of time and effort if customers request for these parts to be changed," said Mr Lu, 47.

He added that in order for car repair shops to provide such a "money-back guarantee", they must raise their prices for repairs and parts to offset potential losses if unhappy customers were to return.
