CRUSHED
Singapore's women's table tennis team will not be able to at least match their silver medal feat of the Beijing Olympics.

On Sunday night (Monday morning, Singapore time), the Republic's hopes of reaching the women's team final at the London Games ended with a crushing 3-0 defeat to world No 2 Japan in a best-of-five games in front of a capacity 3,000 crowd inside London's ExCel Arena.

Ai Fukuhara got the Japanese off to a winning start against the third seeded Singaporeans by beating Feng Tianwei 3-1 (11-9, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9) before team-mate Kasumi Ishikawa overcame Wang Yuegu 3-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-2).

And Japan sealed their passage into Tuesday's final when the pairing of Ishikawa and Sayaka Hirano beat Wang and Li Jiawei 3-0 (11-3, 13-11, 11-4) in the doubles.

They will face either top seeds China or fourth-seeds South Korea in the final.
