An Australian woman who stole a branded wallet at Changi Airport's duty-free shops has been jailed one day and made to pay a fine of $1,200 on Wednesday.

On June 17, Alexander Bratislava, 56, was shopping at Terminal 3 departure transit mall when she slipped a Salvatore Ferragamo wallet, worth $690, under her armpit.

The court heard that she left the DFS Fashion Avenue store without making payment. Thereafter, she got on her flight and left Singapore.

A sales assistant only realised that a wallet was missing about half an hour later. She alerted the duty manager, who reviewed closed-circuit television and found that Bratislava had stolen it. A police report was lodged.

Bratislava was arrested by Airport Police division on Monday when she was on transit in Singapore, reported The Straits Times.

In court, Bratislava looked remorseful, according to the report, and pleaded for leniency.

When asked about the wallet, she said that she had dropped it.

She could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined.
