A taxi driver has been sentenced to three weeks in jail for attempting to a bribe an auxiliary police officer.

The incident took place on 4 February this year at the Budget Terminal of Changi Airport when auxiliary police officer Issac spotted Ng Liew Kong, a 69 year-old taxi driver, beating a red light and cutting across a pedestrian lane to let his female passenger alight.

The auxiliary police officer explained to Mr. Ng that the penalty for beating a red light was a fine of $200 and 12 demerit points. The officer repeated the explanation, at which point Mr. Ng offered him $50.

Isaac tried to warn Mr. Ng against extending the bribe and asked him twice to keep his cash, but Mr. Ng did not comply and was arrested.

In court, Mr. Ng pleaded that he should be exempted from a jail sentence because of his age, and in view of the fact that he needs to take his paralysed wife for weekly medical treatments.

When passing the sentence, Judge Liu Wei Bin said that while he took into consideration Mr. Ng’s old age, he was clearly fit enough to drive a taxi and thus would serve three weeks -- versus a four- to six-week term -- for attempted bribery and a fine of $800 for beating the red light.

Also, the $50 Mr. Ng tried to bribe the officer with was confiscated.
