Former Sporting Gijon coach Manuel Preciado, who was set to be named the new manager of Villarreal, has died of a heart attack at the age of 54, the club announced on Thursday.

"A heart attack overnight in Valencia claimed the life of Manuel Preciado," Villarreal reported in a statement.

Preciado suffered the fatal attack in a hotel in Valencia from where he was due to travel to Villarreal later Thursday to be unveiled as their new coach on Friday.

"Villarreal want to express their deepest sorrow at the sad loss and want to offer their condolences to his family and all his relatives," the Spanish club added.
