A 14-month-old baby was killed instantly after he was thrown out of the family car in a crash at Km203.8 of the North-South Expressway yesterday.

Mohamad Fiffy Furqan Mohd Fahmi was travelling with his parents and two older sisters from Kuala Lumpur to their home- town in Jitra, Kedah, when the accident happened at 3.20am.

Taiping police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusof Mohd Diah said the boy's father, Mohd Fahmi Salleh, 34, was driving a Proton Gen-2 when he swerved to avoid an unidentified object in the middle of the north-bound lane.

He said the car skidded before hitting the divider. A Perodua Viva travelling behind knocked into it.

"The collision caused the boy, who was in his mother's arms, to be thrown out of the open window and fall on the road.

"He suffered serious head injuries and died at the scene."

Fahmi, his wife Norasmah Ngah Seri, 32, and their daughters, aged 5 and 7, received minor injuries.

Yusof said three people in the second car suffered minor injuries and received outpatient treatment at Taiping Hospital.

A Perak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the victims were trapped inside the wreckage for about an hour before being rescued by passers-by.
