Counsellors have helped four adult sexual-assault victims recount their ordeal during police investigations since a trial started last December.

The police, who are conducting the ongoing effort with the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware), said they are also open to working with other agencies or non-governmental groups (NGOs).

Under the trial, Aware counsellors can sit in at police interviews which could prove distressing to victims. This is the first time the police are partnering an NGO to help sexual-assault victims who are mostly women and children.

Responding to queries from The Straits Times, the police confirmed that its Criminal Investigation Department's Serious Sexual Crimes Branch (SSCB) is working with Aware and the counsellors are 'intended strictly to provide emotional support' to victims.
