Georgian native Phillip Phillips -- a 21-year-old pawn shop assistant with a passion for the blues -- may be the new American Idol.

But behind his brave face, he's had to battle through eight kidney operations and plenty of self-doubt to beat 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez at Thursday's grand finale.

"I am just in awe," said Phillips in a group call interview with Yahoo! Singapore, adding that he was caught completely off-guard.

So emotional was Phillips after his win that he started but couldn't finish his finale song, "Home", his face crumpling as he struggled to regain composure. He didn't -- and practically ran off stage into the arms of his ecstatic family after the song ended.

His shock was understandable -- he had nearly dropped out during the season after finding out that his right kidney was not functioning, and Phillips had said time and again during the season that the other top 11 contestants all had better voices than him.

"I didn't even think I would make it in front of the judges," said Phillips.

When asked what he felt like being compared to the previous four male winners, he again displayed his characteristic humility, putting his win down to his flair with his guitar.

"I'm not that great of a singer. They're probably better singers than I am, but I play guitar a lot different than they did. I don't just strum chords," said Phillips.
