DPMM FC 1-0 Courts Young Lions
Thursday's S.League Results
DPMM FC needed a last-gasp goal from Azwan Salleh in order to stay top of the Great Eastern-YEO's S.League with a 1-0 win over Courts Young Lions.
Heading into Friday's game at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium ahead of second-placed Harimau Muda only on goal difference, Vjeran Simunic's men were aware that anything less than a win could see them lose top spot by the end of the weekend.
But with the league's bottom side visiting them at their mighty Bruneian fortress, DPMM would have been forgiven for thinking the game was a mere formality.
However, the Young Lions showed plenty of grit and drive, something that has been missing from their performances for much of the season, and looked set to hold the hosts to a shock draw until Azwan's timely intervention.
Elsewhere on Friday, Balestier Khalsa bounced back from two games without a win by beating Albirex Niigata 2-1 at the Jurong East Stadium.
Zulkiffli Hassim put the Tigers in front after 28 minutes but while they were pegged back seven minutes later by Kunihiro Yamashita, Park Kang-jin sealed all three points with a well-taken strike on the hour mark.
In the opening match of the round on Thursday, SAFFC had to come from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw against Woodlands Wellington.
Moon Soon-ho gave the Rams a shock lead in the 15th minute although SAFFC hit back shortly after when Mislav Karoglan nodded home a Tatsuro Inui freekick.
However, Woodlands went ahead once more when Moon struck again just after the hour mark, and it took a smashing effort from Ruzaini Zainal to ensure the Warriors did not go home emptyhanded.
