New Malay heritage centre will be called 'Wisma Geylang Serai'

The new Malay heritage centre in Geylang Serai will be called 'Wisma Geylang Serai' after a panel chaired by former Member of Parliament (MP) Mr Yatiman Yusof finalised the name.

Mr Yatiman Yusof said 'Wisma' reflects the distinctive cultural identity of Geylang Serai and is also forward-looking and cosmopolitan at the same time.

Nearly 1,300 online votes were received over a two-week 'Name It!' Competition in February. Nominations were called in November last year. About 380 entries were received.

The proposed civic centre at Geylang Serai has a gross floor area of at least 10,000 square metres and is envisaged to house a Malay Heritage Gallery, the Geylang Serai Community Club, Southeast Community Development Centre, as well as possibly some arts groups, and will be completed by 2016.
