New degree opportunities for social service workers

Social service practitioners with at least two years of experience will be able to pursue a degree after completing Social Service Training Institute (SSTI) and the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) academy's diploma programme from July 2012.

The Diploma in Social Service (HDSS)will be offered by the SSTI and the NCSS academy.

Graduates from the programme will be eligible to apply for UniSIM's Bachelor of Social Work programme directly as a result of the partnership between SSTI and SIM University (UniSIM).

A training fund of $400,000 has been made available for training opportunities for its member Voluntary Welfare Organisation (VWOs).

To date about 2,000 social service professionals have benefited from the programme.

To further benefit the professionals an electronic journal database of reference material will be made available to all member VWOs from April.

It will allow them free and convenient access to regularly updated materials for their research and allow them to stay updated of the latest developments in the industry.

NCSS will also launch the second run of its Early Intervention Programme for Infants and Children (EIPIC) Manpower Building and Resource Assigning Scheme (EMBRACE), a train-and-place programme, come July 2012.

The programme is targeted at individuals who want to be EIPIC teachers and teacher-aides.

The 10-week training programme also has a classroom component on 'Introduction to Early Intervention' and an on-the-job training at an EIPIC centre.

The organisation will also facilitate employment placement of graduates from the scheme to an EIPIC centre.
