There are plans to add 3,700 hospital beds - comprising 1,900 acute beds and 1,800 community hospital beds - by the year 2020.
Some 6,400 nurses are needed to staff these facilities. At present, there are about 32,000 registered nurses in Singapore.
To meet this demand, the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) has put in place several programmes for adults who want to take up a nursing career.
It aims to train 50 individuals every year.
For one, there's a two-year professional conversion programme for nurses at Nanyang Polytechnic, which is aimed at mid-career professionals.
Another conversion programme offered by WDA is the three-year Place-and-Train diploma in nursing. This course was introduced in 2008 and is held in Parkway College.
So far, 516 nurses have graduated from the agency's nursing conversion programmes.
