Fathers@Schools programme appoints first batch of parent ambassadors

The Fathers At School programme appointed its first batch of 23 parent volunteers as ambassadors.

The parent volunteers come from six primary schools and seven secondary schools, and as ambassadors, they will focus on encouraging more fathers to get involved in their children's education.

The ambassadors received their appointment certificates on Saturday from Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Education Ministry Hawazi Daipi.

Mr Hawazi said fathers should be more involved in their children's education as research has shown that parental involvement helps to improve a child's academic performance and overall behaviour.

The Fathers At School programme has seen an increase in membership from 55 to 162 schools since its launch in 2010, and fathers said the activities have been helpful.

Dennis Chan, whose son studies at Gan Eng Seng Secondary School, said: "By joining the programme Fathers At School, you get to understand what the school is doing and teaching now. We understand them better, and we are able to communicate better, in more or less the same kind of lingo with the school."

The ambassadors will be organising workshops and discussions about fatherhood. A short film by Jack Neo, 'the Little Star', will be distributed to schools in the coming months, encouraging fathers to discuss the themes of parenthood presented in the film.

The Fathers At Schools programme is an initiative under Dads For Life, which is run by the Father's Action Network.
