Red Cross, HSA call on blood donors to step forward

The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) are appealing for blood donors, in particular those with O blood, to step forward to donate this weekend.

SRC and HSA urge healthy individuals between 18 and 60 years, who weigh at least 45kg to come forward. Donors who have not donated in the past 12 weeks are encouraged to step forward as well.

The national stockpile is currently around 1,200 units as of Thursday, March 22, which can last for the next three to four days, an SRC spokesman said. However, they aim to raise blood stock levels to at least six days' supply or 1,800 units to meet daily transfusion needs and bleeding emergencies.

Blood stock levels have been dipping over the past week due to an increase in hospital utilisation and reduced support for community bloodmobiles, the SRC added.
