Chinese NUS scholar gets disciplinary action for derogatory comments online

The Chinese undergraduate scholarship student who posted derogatory comments online about Singaporeans, calling them "more dogs than humans", has been given disciplinary action by National University Singapore (NUS).

25-year-old Sun Xu will serve three months of community service, otherwise he will not be allowed to graduate, fined $3,000 and has been given an official reprimand.

A circular sent out to NUS students by Prof Tan Eng Chye, Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost said "The Board of Discipline has ruled his remarks as improper, insensitive and disrespectful to the community.

"The remarks has also stirred up considerate unease, distrust and ill-will within and beyond the university community".

As NUS is the administrator of his scholarship, it also said that "his undergraduate scholarship benefits have been terminated for the final semester as his behaviour was unbecoming of a scholarship holder".

The circular did point out that Sun Xu "has since been counselled and has apologised unreservedly".

Local news reports said the final year mechanical engineering student posted a message on his profile page of social networking site Ren Ren that the last month "has been filled with great regrets and remorse".

Reports also said that he said his comments were disrespectful and inappropriate, and that he was very sorry for making those comments.

He wrote this in both English and Mandarin.

In February, Sun Xu had blogged about his unpleasant encounters with Singaporeans that caused a stir online after it went viral.

The Straits Times reported that many riled netizens had called for his Ministry of Education (MOE) scholarship to be revoked.
