MCYS to spend $13m on six children's homes

Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Halimah Yacob announced today that it will be spending $13 million to build six specialised homes for vulnerable children and youths in the next four years.

These homes will be called Small Group Homes and will cater to children with higher needs.

They will provide more intensive services such as therapy and personalised tutoring and mentoring.

There are about 900 children and youths who are living in 22 children's homes as of Jan 2012.

These homes currently have a staff ration of one to 25 children and are unable to cater to the most vulnerable and needy children.

The Small Group Homes will allow for a staff ratio of one staff to three children and the first two will be up by the second half of this year.

The remaining four will be progressively developed between 2013 and 2015.
