Officer who had stopped to help stranded motorists, struck and killed

A Honolulu patrol officer died Sunday helping stranded motorists, police said.

Garret Davis, 28, was delivering paperwork to headquarters when he stopped to help a couple whose vehicle had stalled. Police Chief Louis Kealoha said a Chevrolet Silverado struck Davis' patrol car, which had its blue lights activated.

"Officer Davis turned on his blue lights and stopped behind the stalled vehicle to shield it from on-coming traffic and to alert other drivers to the stall," Kealoha said, adding that when the Silverado rammed Davis' vehicle into the stalled car moments later, "he didn't even have a chance to get out."
