Man pleads guilty to embezzling $176,470 from Muslim religious trust

The four properties in Joo Chiat were placed in a trust upon the death of tycoon Mr Syed Hood Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alsagoff in 1931 so that the rent collected would pay for the upkeep of a mosque in Yemen.

Some 37 years later, a trustee diverted some of the money into his own pocket.

In a district court on Wednesday, businessman Abu Bakar Said Ahmad Alhabsi, 72, pleaded guilty to misappropriating $176,470 between 2004 and 2007. He will be sentenced on Apr 2 as he intends to make full restitution.
