Swift Arrest Of Four Involved In Spate Of Loanshark Harassment By Fire Cases

In an operation led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on 13 October 2011 which ended around 10pm, Police arrested four men aged 21 to 24 years who are believed to be involved in a series of loanshark harassment by fire cases committed island-wide.

The four suspects are believed to be responsible for at least eight loanshark harassment cases that occurred at island-wide locations including Tampines, Jurong, Clementi, Yishun and Serangoon North between 8 October 2011 and 11 October 2011. In these cases, the front doors of the victims’ residences were set on fire. All suspects will be charged in Court on 15 October 2011 under the Moneylenders Act.

Under the Act, persons found guilty of committing loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to be punished with not less than three strokes of the cane.
