MOH looks to ease labour crunch

The Government is exploring ways to ease the manpower crunch in the healthcare sector and would look at both local and foreign help.

Speaking yesterday on the sidelines of an annual free public health screening event, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said his ministry is formulating a masterplan for the healthcare system to see "what kind of capacity our healthcare services will need", taking into consideration demographic shifts, the ageing population and Singaporeans' longer lifespan.

It will then "develop a pipeline of a supply of this manpower, whether they are locally-trained or overseas-trained".

As Singaporeans live longer, geriatrics - a branch of medicine dealing with the diseases and care of old people - will become more important as more elderly citizens are expected to suffer from chronic diseases.
