Malaysia calls off search for two missing S'poreans

Two Singaporean men Mr Keith Peck, 31, and Mr Sam Tan Ah Juan, 55, went missing while on a fishing trip with five friends. They had been out at sea for a day when the boat was struck by a tanker near Pulau Aur at about 10pm last Saturday.

Mr Peck's family has even offered a RM50,000 (S$20,340) reward to anyone who brings him back alive, and has been spreading the word about the money throughout the fishing community in the area, but a week on from the accident, there is still no news of where they are, as such the Malaysian authorities have called off their search.

Yesterday, Mr Zulkifli Abu Bakar, First Admiral (Maritime) of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, told The Straits Times it would stop searching after its boats returned at the end of the day.

The agency has already extended its search by two days, but to no avail. It usually limits sea searches to three days, because most people can survive adrift for only 48 hours.

Rescuers had to contend with bad weather for a second day yesterday, as rain lashed the area in the South China Sea.
