While halfway down-riding, one of the boy's slippers got stuck at the side of the escalator belt, and he tumbled down to the landing.
According to one witness, a Mr Soo, 42, the boy was bleeding and his big toe was lodged in the escalator belt.
Mr Soo said the boy was taken to the National University Hospital.
According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), it received a call at 2.25pm that a boy's toe was stuck in the escalator.
However, the boy and his family had already left for the hospital when its officers arrived at the scene seven minutes later.
Mr Soo told MediaCorp that he saw SCDF officers "removing something from the escalator and putting it into a bucket with ice".
