Police would like to alert members of public to job application scams whereby culprits would contact victims who expressed interest in jobs on online websites.
Culprits would deceive victims with a job offer and meet them at a telecommunication company outlet. Victims would be asked to purchase a mobile phone with subscription plan as part of “company policy”.
The culprits would take newly purchased mobile phone on pretext of “activating” them and told the victims it would be returned to them on the first day of their work. Thereafter, the culprits would be ceased contact with their victims.
2 When being offered a job, please adopt the following measures to prevent falling victim to such scams:
- Always verify the person’s identity and the company he or she represents; and|
- Do not purchase new mobile phones or subscribe to a new mobile line in return for a job offer. Most companies do not have such policies.
3 Victims of scams should report the matter to the Police immediately.
