Transnational crime: “It is time for us to sharpen the sword.” - DPM Teo

“It is time for us to ‘sharpen the sword’ and take the fight to the syndicates on the ground,” said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

He was referring to a need for Asean to look beyond its borders and current working methods in order to effectively battle transnational crime.

DPM Teo, who is also the Co-ordinating Minister for National Security and the Home Affairs Minister, was speaking at the 11th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) on 26 July 2011.

150 foreign delegates from Asean, together with their dialogue partners, gathered at the annual regional meeting of senior law enforcement officers to collaborate and share information and experiences on fighting transnational crime.

DPM Teo added there are three areas that can help Asean focus in its campaign:
- A deep understanding of crime trends in the region
- Extend cooperation to regional or international partners; and
- Increase attention to cybercrime
