The 8.50am drama first unfolded at a goldsmith's shop in Inanam, about 15km from here, on Saturday. The man had walked into the jewellery shop and asked to look at some of the necklaces on display.

The shop owner became worried about the man, who was acting suspiciously when 'inspecting' the jewellery. As the man reached into his trouser pocket, the shop owner pulled out pepper spray and sprayed the man's face.

Yelling in pain, the man grabbed a few pieces of jewellery before fleeing. The suspect ran towards a van and ordered the driver to drive him away.

The driver refused and the suspect pulled out a pistol and shot him in the stomach. He then fled towards some nearby bushes.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Ahmad Sofi Zakaria said police were looking for a Filipino national identified as Jakal Kadar, in his 30's, whom they believe was still in the state capital.
