A LORRY driver booked for alleged careless driving along an expressway tried to get himself off the hook by offering a bribe to a traffic cop.

Toh Guan Keng alias Toh Ting Keng, 65, had pleaded with Corporal Roslan Abdul Rasip not to issue him a summons when he was stopped along Seletar Expressway on Dec 23 last year.

Corporal Roslan had explained the offence to Toh and told him that the offence could be compounded for $150 with six demerit points.

Toh then took two $50 bills from his wallet and placed them on the ground.

Cpl Roslan told him to pick up the money and asked in Malay, “Ini buat apa” which means, “What is this for?”.

Toh took the money from the ground and handed it over to the traffic cop, asking him not to issue him a summons.

Yesterday, Toh was sentenced to four weeks’ jail by District Judge Jasbendar Kaur, who said that he had committed a very serious offence.

Toh, who is appealing against the sentence, could have been fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed for up to five years for corruption.
