Drunk man fires at police officer's head, gets shot by backup

On Wednesday around 2:30am, a Louisiana state trooper had pulled a driver over believing the man to be intoxicated. He was about to be placed under arrest when he began to wrestle with the trooper before breaking away, running to his car and getting a revolver.

The trooper immediately called for backup just moments before being shot in the head and knocked to the ground by a bullet graze.

The drunk driving suspect was standing over the trooper, revolver in hand, when backup from West Baton Rouge Parish arrived.

One deputy immediately fired at the suspect through the windshield of his own patrol car while another got out of the car and fired. It was unclear how many times the suspect was hit but the suspect was hospitalized in serious condition.

State police believe the man was about to fire again at the prone trooper when backup arrived.

"There's no doubt in our minds these deputies saved his life," Col. Mike Edmonson, commander of state police said.
