Nomination Day dos and don'ts

Note from TuffDaddy: Due to the General Election 2011 going on in Singapore from 27 Apr to 07 May, I won't really have time to update every piece of news on here. I'm sorry about that. For news on the GE, check out the following links for updates by real professionals.

1. GENERAL Election candidates have one hour, between 11am and noon on Wednesday to submit their papers at a nomination centre. An incomplete application means the nomination papers will be rejected and the candidate or team disqualified.

2. Candidates must submit their papers at the correct nomination centre in person, accompanied by a proposer, seconder and at least four assentors. These individuals must be registered voters from the constituency that the candidates are contesting in, and must be present when the nomination is filed.

3. Objections to the nomination papers can be made in writing between 11am and 12.30pm by any rival candidate for the same constituency or any of their proposers, seconders or assentors. Any errors on the forms must be corrected before noon.

4. Each candidate, or group of candidates, must also bring their election deposit of $16,000. This can be in cash, cashier's order, bank draft or a receipt - if the amount was paid beforehand.

5. At Nomination Centres, thank you speeches to supporters after the close of Nomination Day, for instance, have to be kept within a minute for solo-candidates and three minutes for teams contesting a GRC.

6. Members of the public who want to head down to the Nomination Centres should take public transport and be prepared for bags and other belongings to be checked, Police said on Tuesday.

7. The centres are open to the public only after 10am, and only vehicles with authorised parking labels will be allowed in.
