The Reds are believed to have beaten Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea to Rennes midfielder Sylvain Marveaux's signature.

The attacking midfielder, who can also play on the left-wing, has played just 10 league games this season, having picking up a serious groin injury in November.

But Liverpool director of football Damien Comoll has seen enough to prise him away from the French Ligue 1 side.

The free transfer for Marveaux was agreed in April with the left-footed midfielder nearing the end of his contract at Rennes.
