SCDF team back from Christchurch

SINGAPORE - The first batch of Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers have returned from Christchurch where they have been helping with earthquake relief efforts.

Of the 55 members sent, 21 personnel and four dogs arrived at Changi Airport yesterday evening.

They were received by New Zealand High Commissioner Peter Hamilton and SCDF Commissioner Peter Lim.

The SCDF Lionheart Contingent carried out search-and-rescue operations at 44 sites hit by the quake.

The remaining members of the contingent will continue to assist with the recovery operations at Christchurch.

Some of them said the experience has taught them to appreciate life.
