VIDEO: Man broke father's ribs over $2,000

SINGAPORE - An unemployed man beat his 67-year-old father and broke three of his ribs after the latter did not give him money.

Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported that the 37-year-old unemployed man had flown into a rage and started hitting his father after he did not get the $2,000 he asked for.

The older man suffered from three broken ribs and facial injuries. His left eye was also swollen. He was later sent to Khoo Teck Puat hospital for treatment.

When interviewed by Shin Min Daily, the old man said that his son had returned home drunk and asked him for $2,000. When he said that he did not have the money, his son started hitting him with a chair and bottles.

A knife measuring approximately 20 cm was found at the scene of crime.

Threw a knife

A witness said that the son threw a knife and metal sheets from the tenth floor at ambulances when they arrived. Vehicles nearby were damaged by the items that he threw.

After throwing the items, he went to back to his flat's window and started screaming.

Stand-off

Earlier today, an eyewitness had shot a video of a stand-off between the man and the police.

The man was allegedly wielding a weapon in his HDB flat. He was only arrested after the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force officers made a forced entry into his home after a three-hour stand-off.

He is believed to have barricaded his door with furniture.

In the video, police can be heard shouting "Drop your weapon!" as they attempted to enter the man's apartment. He is believed to have use knife to attack the officers at least twice.

Bystanders also stood outside the apartment, telling the occupant to open the door.

The eyewitness who submitted the video to citizen journalism website STOMP said: "It is not known how the situation ended up but it is believed that the household has a history of domestic violence and the Police have visited the home on many occasions due to the calls from concerned members of the public."

The man has been charged for causing hurt to others.
