Retiring public servants to get option to stay on

SINGAPORE - From July next year, the Public Service Division will offer re-employment to workers who reach retirement age.

The move comes ahead of national legislation in 2012, when employers will be required to offer re-employment options to workers who turn 62.

Some 124,000 public sector employees from 15 ministries and more than 50 statutory boards will eventually be affected. The public service, the largest employer here, hires about four per cent of the total workforce.

The PSD said its decision came after consultation with union leaders. Re-employment will give public sector officers the choice to work up to age 65 and, later, up to 67.

A PSD advisory last year stated that, to qualify for re-employment, an officer must demonstrate satisfactory work performance in the three years prior to retirement and be medically fit to continue working. The officers must also not have any disciplinary action taken against them.
