Calls for more checks on foreign-trained dentists

With the number of foreign-trained dentists here set to grow (currently about 350 of them), there are calls within the industry to be more vigilant when hiring such practitioners.

This after MediaCorp broke the story on Wednesday about Australian dentist George Pegios, who had been banned from practice for a minimum of five years in New South Wales but managed to find employment under a fake name in Singapore's largest dental centre, the Q & M Dental Group.

The Ministry of Health and the SDC are investigating the case of alleged fraudulent registration.

Dr Pegios had been found guilty of professional misconduct in Australia and was implicated in the death of a patient. He was cleared of manslaughter after being embroiled in a lawsuit.
