SIA to replace engines on three A380 aircraft, flights grounded

SINGAPORE - Singapore Airlines (SIA) is replacing the engines on three of its 11 A380 aircraft.

The flights were grounded in Sydney, Melbourne and London.

This latest development follows the recent Rolls-Royce engine failure of Qantas flight QF32, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing at Changi Airport on Nov 4.

SIA said Rolls-Royce had recommended further inspections of the engines because of oil staining. It stressed the measures were precautionary and unrelated, as the oil stains were different from the oil leak in the Qantas turbines.

All three returning planes will be fitted with spare Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines - and are expected to be ready for take-off in about two days.
