Letter from Ishwar Mahtani via Today
Recently when I was hospitalised, I noticed that many patients were impatient and boisterous when dealing with nurses.
Although the nurses tried hard to please the patients, many patients spoke rudely to the nurses.
I think many of these patients treated the nurses as maids and probably felt they are entitled to treat them in this manner.
Many patients would shout (sometimes vulgarities) at the nurses, and I believe this sort of treatment can add to the stress of what is an already stressful job.
Patients' relatives these days also seem to be more demanding.
Often, these relatives can be seen scolding the nurses whenever they are not pleased with something.
I hope the Health Sciences Authority can look into this and ensure that our nurses are better protected, and are not abused or ill treated by inconsiderate and unruly patients.
Otherwise nurses may end up becoming very stressed or even falling ill as a result of the bad attitude of patients or even their relatives.
