SINGAPORE : Singapore's Muslim community received its first batch of 1,900 sheep for its annual korban ritual for this year's Hari Raya Haji, which falls on Wednesday.

The sheep from Perth arrived at Changi Airport's Cargo Complex at 7.50am on Sunday.

The expected time of arrival was 6.20am, but it was delayed because of the longer route the SQ flight had to take due to Mount Merapi ash.

And for the first time, Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo and some MPs joined the community to receive the sheep, and witness their smooth delivery to mosques.

Two more batches will arrive from Perth on Monday, with the last batch expected from Adelaide on Tuesday.

The sheep were distributed to 19 mosques and one organisation on the first day.

Following a short prayer, Mr Yeo opened the first crate to officiate the transfer process.
