Police warn of increase in phone scams

Police have warned the public to be wary of scams where genuine police and Supreme Court phone numbers are used to cheat people. The calls were not made from these offices, a police statement said yesterday.

They would impersonate police officers or staff members of the Supreme Court and ask the victims to transfer money into bank accounts to exonerate themselves from criminal cases or court hearings.

Last month, there were 34 reported cases including one involving a victim who was cheated of $25,000. MORE
