The setbacks have come in an early rush: star summer signing Joe Cole sent off in his first league game against Arsenal, Javier Mascherano so unsettled by talk of a move to Barcelona that he either could not or would not play at Eastlands last night.

And then last night, Hodgson had to watch as Liverpool were well beaten by Manchester City to underline the fact that reclaiming their Champions League spot is going to be a decidedly uphill struggle.
