Loan-shark runner feels brunt of law

A 24-year-old loan-shark runner was jailed yesterday for three years, fined $30,000 and given 15 strokes of the cane.

In April, Nelson Jeyaraj Chandran, together with an accomplice, set fire to the front doors of five HDB flats in estates such as Geylang Bahru, Hougang and Anchorvale Link.

He also spraypainted messages on the units' walls, claiming that the occupants had not repaid their debts, causing more than $4,500 worth of damage.

Nelson was paid $150 for every main door he set fire to - $90 more than what he would have earned from leaving behind inked messages. MORE
