You can't see me.
Real Madrid tore apart Bayern Munich's ragged defence with a ruthless first-half display as they thrashed the defending champions 4-0 in their own stadium to reach their first Champions League final for 12 years on Tuesday.

Two Sergio Ramos headers put Real 2-0 ahead after 20 minutes of the semi-final second leg and Cristiano Ronaldo added a third from a superb break before halftime.

That was his 15th goal of the competition, a record for a single season, and he extended the tally to 16 in the 90th minute.

Bayern, treble winners last season, were never in the hunt as they slumped to a 5-0 aggregate defeat which will leave a huge stain on coach Pep Guardiola's previously enviable record in the competition.

The only negative for Real was a booking for Xabi Alonso which will rule him out of the final against either city rivals Atletico Madrid or Chelsea.

Singapore has big ambitions for its hosting of the 2015 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Not only are organisers determined to put on a spectacle, they are already confident that the 28th edition of the regional meet will provide an example for all to follow – mainly through the careful selection of sports to be contested.

The SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) Exco announced on Tuesday afternoon the finalised list of sports (36) and events (402) at the Games, to be held from 5 to 16 June next year.

This number of sports is six more than the 30 first announced last year, with the additions being boxing, equestrian, floorball, petanque, rowing and volleyball.

The 2015 SEA Games, which return to Singapore after a 22-year wait, will feature only two “traditional” sports – floorball and netball – compared to up to eight at Games editions over the last decade.

Out of the 36 sports in total, 34 are contested at the Asian Games while 24 are of Olympic pedigree.

Singaporean ‘supermum’ is a BJJ fighter, businesswoman and single mother all in one

Think being a mother is hard?

Try being a single mum to three young kids while running three martial arts schools and a martial arts equipment firm – and winning medals as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) fighter at regional- and global-level opens.

Such is the life of 37-year-old Arlene Lim, a former Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) regular who was the first local female armour officer.

Granted, the BJJ blue-belt (second rank) and third-degree taekwondo black-belt does get some help: two of Lim’s academies are operated by their respective head instructors, while her mother watches the kids when she can’t.

But there’s no denying the frustrations and struggles behind solo motherhood, said Lim, whose marriage to taekwondo practicioner Santos Rivas fell apart in 2011.

“Unfortunately, my relationship with my ex-husband is not quite as congenial as Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘conscious de-coupling’ from Chris Martin,” she revealed. “So there are times where I would scream bloody murder. When that happens I just breathe and let go!”

Above all, it’s martial arts that keeps her sane and keeps her children close by. The trio of Isabel, Alejandro and Sofia Rivas all started training in taekwondo and BJJ from the age of three, and 10-year-old Isabel is already a six-time national taekwondo champion.

Along with her female friends, Lim first decided to pick up taekwondo at the age of 23, after her roommate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology was mugged.

Under the tutelage of Grandmaster Jae Hun Kim in Boston, US, she blossomed and subsequently represented Singapore in major tournaments such as the US Open and Asian and Southeast Asian championships.

She later returned home in 2000 to serve an eight-year bond with the SAF. When that was done and dusted, Lim and Santos – who was Grandmaster Jae’s top disciple and protégé – set up the JH Kim Taekwondo Institute and expanded it to seven locations islandwide.

After her divorce in 2011, she underwent a self-imposed hiatus from taekwondo for nearly two years.

“My whole life revolved around taekwondo and I just wanted to get away from it all… at all costs,” said Lim. “So I went to Evolve Mixed Martial Arts to pick up a new martial art. I did Muay Thai for a month but got bored, then I found Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.”

“BJJ gave me perspective and a chance to start things afresh,” she declared. “It helped me to clear my mind, focus on the tasks at hand… leave behind my worries.”

Lim added, “When you start something new and are completely engaged… you let go of things that bother you.”

She took to BJJ obsessively, training twice a day, every day, until she was good enough to compete.

Going for tournaments gave her a new goal to focus on, and by the end of 2013, she set up a new academy in Balestier, Trifecta, which offers lessons in taekwondo and BJJ.

Trifecta adopts a family-oriented approach, offering a safe and friendly environment for both adults and children. It became an instant hit, attracting about 150 active members in its first four months of operation.

Parents can send their kids from as young as three for Trifecta’s PowerTots class, or sign up for family sessions with their kids. All classes are kept small, to a maximum capacity of 10, so all students are given dedicated attention from instructors.

“We are not the swankiest gym, we are not macho or hardcore with world champion fighters as instructors, but what we sell is that journey of growth that we want to take with you,” Lim explained.

“Martial arts encourage personal growth, helping to expand our minds, as well as strengthen bodies and spirits. Everyone has different objectives for taking up martial arts and (they) also take away different lessons.”

One small step for Mok Ying Ren, one giant leap for Singapore sports.

Mere moments after the announcement of his three-year, S$100,000 sponsorship by budget carrier AirAsia, the Singaporean and Southeast Asian (SEA) Games marathon and triathlon champion was already thinking of his fellow countrymen.

“This is a big step for sports in Singapore,” said Mok, 25. “I hope more and more corporate companies will come in and support athletes.”

His AirAsia sponsorship, which runs from 1 January 2014 to 1 January 2017, will mainly cover travel expenses, including flights for all overseas training and races, in preparation for Mok’s big goal of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic marathon event in Brazil.

Local fans of Mok will even enjoy travel packages to support the long-distance ace’s overseas exploits.

“We are extremely privileged and proud to support Mok and his big dream of representing Singapore at the 2016 Olympics… We are glad to provide Mok with a platform to excel globally,” said the Malaysian airline’s Singapore CEO Logan Velaitham.

Mok, who is the first Singaporean to win marathon gold at the SEA Games, could not agree more.

“This is not just about me,” the current National Service Full-time (NSF) doctor explained. “We need to start this going…with the SEA Games coming in 2015, many athletes are going fulltime. We need this culture where private companies come in and help.”

“We can’t always rely on the government to keep dispensing funds,” said Mok.

Households using City Gas will pay more for town gas from next month till the end of July.

City Gas, which supplies town gas to almost 90 per cent of residents living in new Housing Development Board estates and private properties, said yesterday that gas prices for households will increase by 0.3 per cent from 21.01 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) to 21.08 cents per kWh in the three-month period.

This is due to a rise in fuel costs from the previous quarter. The move will increase the average monthly gas bill for a four-room flat by S$0.06, said City Gas.

The gas tariffs are based on guidelines issued by the Energy Market Authority — the gas industry regulator.

Chai Chee residents now have one more option when travelling to the Bedok MRT Station and bus interchange, with the introduction of the new peak-period short service 222P.

The service, run by private bus operator ComfortDelGro, is meant to ease crowding, reduce waiting time and improve bus reliability during peak hours.

Operating from Bedok MRT Station, Service 222P plies portions of the route currently run by feeder bus service 222.

The new service, which operates on a 12-minute frequency during the morning and evening peak hours, will travel along New Upper Changi Road, Chai Chee Road, Chai Chee Street and Chai Chee Drive before heading back to the MRT station.

Service 222P is one of five new peak-period short bus services that have been launched progressively.

The short bus services are part of the S$1.1 billion Bus Service Enhancement Programme launched in September 2012.

Apps that track school buses aim to calm anxious parents

Anxious parents craning their necks to look out for delayed school buses can expect some relief when the nation’s first suite of school bus tracking apps, which would allow them to track their child’s ride in real time, is rolled out to 15 schools in the coming months.

The schools comprise a mix of pre-schools and international schools here.

The MyBusMate suite of three apps, which was launched yesterday, was first tested out by four schools, including an international boarding school in Johor Baru, Malaysia, over a period of time.

The apps will provide much-needed communication between parents, schools and bus companies, ensuring that everyone is kept in the loop with any problems or when the schedule changes, she said.

The suite of three apps — the main MyBusMate app for parents, an on-board app for bus attendants and the Geo Tracker app — is available for download at the Apple Store and Google Play. Schools and buses will also have dashboards that track individual buses or the entire fleet, for instance. All three apps are free to download.

Geo Tracker allows parents and schools to track the whereabouts of school buses. Parents receive automatic proximity notifications of the bus’ arrival, allowing them to time their send-offs and pick-ups, cutting waiting times significantly.

The apps also come with additional features such as an instant messaging platform that allows schools, buses and bus companies to communicate with each other directly. With it, parents would, for instance, be able to inform the school and bus operator that their child was ill and unable to attend school that day, said Mr Boneham. Other features, such as a shared calendar, help remind parents of school events.

Mr Boneham said the team made conscious decisions in its choice of technology, design and implementation to keep costs low. Depending on whether the schools require the team to provide hardware, such as tablets, the developer is charging a monthly fee of between S$5 to S$8 per student for this service.

MyBusMate plans to offer the service to about 30 to 40 schools by the end of the year and aims to reach more local schools as well, Mr Boneham said.

Apple, Zara and IKEA products cost more in Singapore than other cities

Buying a product from Apple, Zara and IKEA could cost more in Singapore compared to 10 other cities, according to a study by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).

According to the study -- which analyses price differences for 647 items from the three global brands across the 11 cities --"Singapore's prices are found to be relatively high in most instances".

Releasing the findings on Tuesday as part of the its Macroeconomic Review, MAS said Singapore's prices are above the median for two-thirds of the items, and prices for about a quarter of them are below the median.

This means that for the same brand, prices in Singapore can be higher than in other cities for some items but lower for others.

Among the cities included in the study are London, Paris, New York, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

A concern for businesses is the perception that things are generally expensive in Singapore. If this perception is reinforced over time, consumer spending in the country could slow, hurting the bottom-line of many firms.

Authorities have stressed that their study should not be taken as representative of differences in the overall cost of living across cities, since only three global brands were analysed.

MAS said the three global brands in the study -- Apple, Zara and IKEA -- were chosen given the large number of identical consumer electronics, furniture, and apparel products that could be compared across cities.

The study also pointed out that Singapore is not the most expensive location, and it is most expensive for only six per cent of the products surveyed.

MOM looking to extend mediation services to rank-and-file workers too

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/mom-looking-to-extend/1089604.html

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) is looking to extend mediation services to more workers, regardless of job profile and salary.

The Tripartite Mediation Framework, which helps professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) settle disputes and grievances over salaries and contracts with their employers, is currently only available to managers and executives who earn up to S$4,500.

However, there are plans to scrap this salary cap and include rank-and-file workers at the same time.

The type of disputes the mediation framework can address could also be widened, for instance, to cover re-employment.

Together with the recently announced proposal for a small claims employment tribunal, the expanded mediation framework, when ready, is expected to give workers access to more avenues of recourse when disputes arise.
