The Government will launch a trial early next year to test the feasibility of providing uninterrupted high-speed internet access to mobile devices when users move from their homes to MRT stations in the vicinity.

Called a heterogeneous network (HetNet), such a network allows data access speeds of up to 1 Gbps, and users will be able to seamlessly switch between different network types while maintaining a consistently good experience.

Announcing this on Tuesday (Dec 30) as it published the findings from its consultation exercise on the Infocomm Media Masterplan, the Infocomm Media Masterplan Steering Committee said the authorities will partner with interested companies on potential industry projects to achieve this.

The consultation took place between March 31 and Sept 30. In all, feedback was obtained from more than 570 respondents.
