The late drama at Saturday’s (Nov 29) ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup match between Singapore and Malaysia sparked scenes at the National Stadium that saw security personnel scrambling.
After Malaysian captain Safiq Rahim converted his injury-time penalty, several Harimau Malaya fans were able to clamber over the perimeter fencing to hug the player before being returned to their seats.
A large section of Singapore fans also stayed on after the match to hurl abuse at Omani referee Ahmed Abu Bakar Said Al Kaf and his fellow officials, who stood on the pitch for a good 10 minutes before being escorted off by riot police, as an assortment of projectiles, including plastic water bottles and toilet rolls, rained down on them.
Responding to TODAY’s queries, Gerard Wong, the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) director of marketing and communications, said: “While FAS does not condone such actions by fans, the goal came at such a pivotal moment of the game with passions running high and the Malaysian fans were shepherded quickly back to the stands by Sports Hub’s security staff.
“FAS has given its feedback to the Sports Hub on this incident, as well as the issue of water bottles thrown from the stands onto the pitch areas. We understand that a review is under way.”
