Raffles Hospital will start receiving emergency patients from the middle of 2015.

Patients will have subsidised care and pay rates similar to those at public hospitals, announced Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Monday (Dec 1).

The health ministry will work with the tertiary care hospital to manage patients with non-critical medical conditions sent there by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) emergency ambulances.

This collaboration is expected to lighten the patient load at Singapore General Hospital, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

If these patients need in-patient care or Specialist Outpatient Care follow-up after leaving the Emergency Department, these services will also be provided by Raffles Hospital.

The Health Minister made the announcement at the groundbreaking ceremony for Raffles Hospital's new extension building.

The S$310 million medical tower will function as a one-stop medical hub, replete with a new ambulatory medical centre with specialist clinics, day surgery and diagnostic services. It will be ready in two years' time.
